When we as church members decide to serve a mission, it is natural to think of proselytizing. Our mission is very different, we work with stake presidents to help them embrace and attend to the needs of their Young Single Adults. Preaching and giving discussions is not part of what we do.
Our apartment building has workers that clean the building, wash our vehicles, and carry our groceries. They are delightful young adults who are happy to have a job and grateful to earn 450 cedi per month or about $60 US, plus tips from generous senior missionaries. One of the workers is Ernest, who always has a smile on his face and spring in his step. He anticipates our needs and hustles to get tasks done. He has won the hearts of the seniors.
Through the years of working in the building he saw many examples of Christ-like behavior from the senior missionaries and began to ask questions about the church. Those questions led to young elders teaching him gospel discussions in our apartments and his eventual baptism. He was raised in humble circumstances and had many obstacles to overcome, but he was determined and on Sunday, May 15 was baptized. His greatest hope now is to serve a mission himself. We wish him the best in that pursuit. His love of the gospel is as big as his smile.
