“True doctrine, understood, changes attitudes and behavior.”
This was demonstrated perfectly in a Sacrament Meeting we attended where a brother bore fervent testimony of the blessings of tithing, sharing his personal journey with this gospel principle. He explained that in the church he previously attended when the collection “tithing” plate was passed, members were expected to contribute 3 or 4 cedis, but he usually didn’t have any money in his pockets. Since the plate was always passed at a certain point in the service, in between two songs, he would purposely slip outside at the beginning of the first song and wait outside until the second song was over. Then he would go back in to listen to the minister.
His attitude changed when the missionaries taught him the true doctrine of tithing, using the scriptures. He gained a testimony, was baptized, and committed to change his behavior - to always pay tithing according to God’s law. Now, he told us, if he goes to church on Sunday and knows that he will receive his salary on the next Tuesday, he pays the tithing on it that day, two days early.
He admitted that sometimes he forgets he has already paid his tithing and pays it again the next week, and that’s fine.
“Ever since I started paying a full tithe, I have never woken up hungry or wondered what I will eat that day.”
