Thoughts on Paths and Potholes

Sister McGlochlin loves the rainy season and the lush green foliage this time of year in Liberia - everything about this is great except for one “minor” problem - potholes caused by the 179 inches of annual rainfall in Monrovia, the rainiest capital city in the world.

You may have noticed that potholes don’t get fixed very quickly in the AWA and just get deeper and deeper. The muddy water that fills them disguises just how perilous they are, so a good idea is to watch the vehicle in front of you and see how they navigate through the minefield.

Sister McGlochlin, who serves in Gbarnga, has learned to drive closely behind an experienced local who is familiar with every crater and crevasse.

When she simply follows their zigzags, driving is much less stressful. It’s almost easy to drive, even in the pouring rain, when you watch and follow the example of a trusted leader.

Now and then another car or a keke squeezes in the middle between you and the lead car. That’s when you have to be extra vigilant about keeping your eye fixed on your guide.

“Life is all too familiar to this parable. Anchor yourself to Jesus Christ who is THE lead car and to His true disciples who will help us all navigate through these difficult obstacles. Everyone has to travel down the road full of large, hidden potholes but none of us have to be stressed out about it!”
