Today or Tomorrow?

One of the luxuries in West Africa is depending upon the fruit vendors to pick my produce. I just tell them:

“Mango for today,” or “Pineapple for tomorrow.”

And it’s perfect - every time. Beyond fresh fruit, there is a lesson to learn. Live for today! My African friends are much better at that than I am. Prepare for tomorrow, but take care of today first. That doesn’t reflect a selfish approach, it means listening to the Spirit to know how you can make the best use of this time, this circumstance, and see the immediate needs of others now, not later.

It makes me think of one of our hymns:

“Today seek the treasure better than gold,

The peace and the joy that are found in the fold.

Today seek the gems that shine in the heart;

While here we labor, choose the better part.

Today, today, work with a will;

Today, today, your duties fulfill.

Today, today, work while you may;

Prepare for tomorrow while working today.”

Pineapple in the AWA is SO GOOD, but cutting it isn’t my favorite, so today the vendor near the MTC was a good sport to show me how it’s done by the pro’s - in 20 seconds!
