There have been other posts about the “Lobola” marriage tradition in West Africa, commonly referred to as the “bride price”. Simply defined, it is the custom by which a bridegroom’s family makes a negotiated payment in cash or goods to the bride’s family in return for the right of marriage. We have all seen and heard of the negative impact of this cultural practice on marriage and families.
You will be happy to know that this problem has been clearly addressed by latter-day Apostles.
“We…appeal to our…members to put away traditions and cultural or tribal practices that lead them away from the path of growth and progress.”
- Elder Dallin H. Oaks
“Labola or bride price is a tradition that seriously interferes with young men and women keeping the commandments of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Priesthood leaders should teach parents to discontinue the practice.”
- Elder Dallin H. Oaks.
“In order to help its members all over the world, the Church teaches its members to give up any personal or family traditions or practices that are contrary to the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ and to this gospel culture.”
- Elder Dallin H. Oaks.
